‘The land of a thousand welcomes’ prides itself on the beauty and practicability of its great outdoors. And as a testament to the country’s increasing attractiveness, the elegant Killruddery House and Gardens hosted the 2016 World Archery Field Championships.
In recent years, Ireland has proven itself to be a top contender for some of the World’s top sporting associations. This has been facilitated by the country’s support for participation events rather than those involving only elite competitors. This is due to the economic opportunities as more often than not event participants spend more than spectators. Given the economic potential of Ireland as a sports host destination, this creates the perfect opportunity for MCI Dublin to position itself as a national key player in the industry. Thereby supporting MCI group’s sports industry portfolio and development strategy.
With this in mind, Archery Ireland & MCI Dublin put together a sports event of world class standard. The 7 day event began with an opening ceremony on the Bray Seafront where 400 world class athletes, including recent Olympians returning from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, proudly waved their Nations flags for the many local onlookers.
MCI provided full event management services, working tirelessly to meet the individual needs of all competitors, teams and spectators alike. Several creative solutions where employed to cope with hard-budget constraints including rallying suppliers for value in kind goods and services, to carefully selecting items to scale back. These measures allowed the association to save several thousands of euros. Additionally, the fields presented their own unique challenges, a complex course layout and qualifying rounds taking place simultaneously throughout the woods and gardens of County Wicklow, which required consistent and effective communication. The competition days were organised “flawlessly”, as described by Archery Ireland, and competition flowed naturally.
The WAFC 2016 attracted national and international newspaper media coverage, was live streamed across the world, and was successfully executed by the team at MCI, who worked in unison with the client on site.
“This event involved logistics and planning for in excess of 400 international visitors and athletes from 32 countries around the globe. We found MCI to be extremely efficient and meticulous in both planning and execution. The event itself ran over a seven day period and MCI staff were on hand 24/7 to provide support and backup to Archery Ireland” – Kevin McDermott, Vice President Archery Ireland
The championship ended with a spectacular closing ceremony topped off with a social evening Gala Dinner in the Royal Hotel Bray, where spirits were high after a long week of intense competition.
