Maui: A Vacation and College Basketball Destination

For the last two years, MCI USA has been managing travel and transportation for the teams, officials and referees, support staff, and some boosters, in addition to the management of housing at three hotels in Lahaina, Hawaii for the Maui Jim Invitational Tournament. We also manage shuttles from hotels to the Lahaina Civic Center, provide the staff for dispatching, the information desk, and support the schools with their transportation needs for practice sessions and tournament games.

The tournament is structured in three formats: the opening games, regional games, and championship round. Eleven teams compete in the opening games, as the seven continental-U.S. island schools host one game each against the four mainland schools. After the opening games are completed, the four mainland schools travel to a mainland host to play in the regional games. In the regional games, each school plays two games in two days. The eight island schools travel to the Lahaina Civic Center to conduct the championship round of the tournament, where each team plays three games in three days and competes for the Wayne Duke Championship Trophy.

In 2017, the boosters had an opportunity to take part of a coach’s dinner, a 5K, and golf tournament. Not to mention the multitude of activities that Maui, Hawaii has to offer. A great place to stay, the Hyatt Regency Lahaina was voted by CNN as the world’s top hotel for stargazing and offers a nightly rooftop astronomy program. During this time of year, it’s also humpback whale season so sightseers have an opportunity to get very close and learn more about these gentle giants. With the reef right off the Lahaina Beach, we highly recommend taking a moment to snorkel around, view the abundant sea life, and get up close with majestic sea turtles. There’s something for everyone!

The contagious passion of the boosters is what makes the Maui Jim Invitational so unique, in addition to the Lahaina Civic Center, which is hardly larger than a high school gym. Imagine eight of the top seated schools descending upon Maui to achieve the coveted championship title. The tournament is broadcasted on ESPN and after each game, the gym is vacated to allow the next set of 2,400 fans access to watch their team.

We’ve just launched registration for 2018 all-tournament sales only. We are excited at the interest in the tournament for 2018 and expect to have record sell-out year.

For those who follow college basketball, the teams in the 2018 tournament include Arizona, Auburn, Duke, Gonzaga, Illinois, Iowa, San Diego, and Xavier. This will occur November 19-21, 2018 at Maui’s famed Lahaina Civic Center. For more information, visit: Maui Jim Invitational.
